How to Take a Canvas Quiz for Students
Before You Begin
Make sure you:
- Have access to the correct Canvas course
- Are logged in using your FAU account
- Are using a supported browser (Chrome recommended) or Canvas iPad app
- Have a stable internet connection
Tip: Avoid taking quizzes on a phone.
Step 1: Log in to Canvas
- Go to canvas.fau.edu.
- Sign in with your FAU credentials.
- From the Dashboard, select the course that contains the quiz.
Step 2: Find the Quiz

- In the course navigation menu, click Quizzes.
- Locate the quiz name in the list.
- Click the quiz title to open it.
Step 3: Review Quiz Details
Before starting the quiz, carefully review:
- Due date and availability window
- Time limit (if any)
- Number of attempts allowed
- Instructions from your instructor
⚠️ Once you start a timed quiz, the timer usually cannot be paused.
Step 4: Start the Quiz
- Click Take the Quiz (or Begin).
- If prompted, confirm that you are ready to start.
- The quiz timer (if enabled) will begin immediately.
Step 5: Answer Questions
- Read each question carefully.
- Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate (if enabled).
- Some quizzes may lock questions after answering.
- For essay or short-answer questions, save your work frequently.
Auto-save: Canvas saves answers as you go, but saving often is still recommended.
Step 6: Submit the Quiz
- When finished, click Submit Quiz.
- Review the submission confirmation screen.
- Make sure you see a submission confirmation message.
✅ Your quiz is not submitted until you click Submit Quiz.
Step 7: View Results (If Available)
Depending on instructor settings, you may be able to:
- See your score immediately
- View correct/incorrect answers
- See feedback or comments
Access results by:
- Returning to the quiz
- Clicking Grades in the course menu
Common Issues and Solutions
I can’t see the quiz
- Check the availability dates
- Make sure you are enrolled in the course
- Look in Modules as well as Quizzes
My quiz closed before I finished
- Contact your instructor immediately
- Provide details (quiz name, time, what happened)
My internet disconnected during the quiz
- Reconnect and return to the quiz as soon as possible
- Canvas may save answers automatically
- Email your instructor if issues persist
The quiz won’t submit
- Try refreshing the page (do not close the browser)
- Take screenshots if you receive an error
- Contact your instructor or COM IT
Best Practices for Success
- Start quizzes early, not at the last minute
- Use a wired or reliable Wi‑Fi connection
- Close extra browser tabs and applications
- Do not use the browser back button
- Read all instructions before starting
